State Issues:

Much of our legislative activity involves work with transportation committee and appropriations committee, the two committees that are responsible for transportation funding. The Legislature’s Joint Standing Committee on Transportation has jurisdiction over the Highway Fund Budget which funds highway and bridge improvements, while the Legislature’s Joint Standing Committee on Appropriations oversees the General Fund budget. Funding for ports and harbors, airports, rail and mass transit facilities comes from the General Fund, which is the jurisdiction of the Joint Standing Committee on Appropriations.

While most of the MBTA’s legislative activity is in the Transportation Committee and, to a lesser degree in Appropriations, bills referred to other Committees are sometimes of interest to the Association’s legislative efforts. See a list of all legislative committees.

In addition to working with legislators, the MBTA also works with transportation leaders and agencies including:

The office of Governor John Elias Baldacci

    The Maine Department of Transportation

    The Maine Turnpike Authority
